Eating Probiotics
Simple traditional foods can have huge health benefits. About 80% of the chronic diseases in the USA are due to a diet of highly refined, processed foods. An increasing number of people are realizing that the basis of good health is good nutrition.
Most of us know that simple remedies and healing agents can be found in fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Yet fresh vegetables are not always in season. There is however a traditional preservation method that also improves taste and health properties. This method of preservation is called lactic acid fermentation. Old-fashioned sauerkraut is an example of lactic acid fermentation.
Lactic acid fermented vegetables eliminate disease-causing bacteria in your digestive tract and reintroduce friendly bacteria, which are destroyed by antibiotic use and residues in our foods. In addition to the good bacteria, this preservation method is high in vitamin C and enzymes. Consuming just 3-4 T of fermented veggies per day can ward off disease, constipation and other intestinal problems.
Many varieties of lactic acid fermented vegetables (pickles, carrots, red cabbage, sauerkraut, etc) can be found in the health food store in the refrigerator section. Be sure and read the labels to avoid pasteurization as this kills the lactic acid bacteria. For those who have a do-it-yourself mentality, Shoreline Center for Healing offers classes on how to make your own lactic acid fermented vegetables. It’s fun, easy, tasty and healthy! Please contact us if you would like to register for a class.

Spring is Here!
Spring (Vernal) Equinox
March 20, 2012 - 1:14 am
Spring is fast approaching and represents many “yang” activities, reflecting the ascending and active nature of spring. Young plants begin their push from their “yin” or winter slumber. An ancient Chinese medical text, The Inner Classic, describes Spring creating wind and is associated with the Wood element, governing the Liver and Gallbladder. This is the season to attend to these organs and do some Spring cleansing. The diet should be the lightest of the year, concentrating on young, leafy greens, which help nourish and cleanse the liver during this season. Too many rich, heavy foods clog the liver, resulting in digestive issues, mood swings, tendon problems and allergies. Therefore, acupuncture treatments to soothe the liver and strengthen the spleen and lungs can help reduce these episodes. Additionally, we can provide a personal spring diet plan to bring about a healthier you. Make an appointment today for your Spring Tune-Up today.

Natural Ways to Lower Blood Pressure
More and more individuals are taking at least one blood pressure medication. We know that lower blood pressure is associated with a longer life, but what we do not know is if lowering blood pressure with medications actually leads to a longer life. Our belief at Shoreline Center for Healing is that avoiding chemicals and long-term medications is best whenever possible.
So when it comes to managing high blood pressure and stress reduction, exercise and deep breathing are great places to begin. Of course it’s always good to take a look at your diet. Eating whole foods is helpful for any condition. Specifically for high blood pressure, avoid foods that come in a box or can. Use natural sea salt. Contrary to popular belief, salt is not bad for us in its natural form. It can actually be good for us and even the glial cells in the brain require salt to function properly. Use unrefined sea salt which should have a slight color, not pure white. Natural sea salt has over 80 minerals in it and tastes wonderful. Table salt has only two minerals, sodium and chloride, and has been heavily processed.
Many people find drinking a few cups of hibiscus flower tea daily helps to lower blood pressure naturally. It has a tart fruity flavor and is delicious either hot or cold and full of antioxidants. It is also used to calm muscle spasms associated with heart and nerve disease.
Also, consider acupuncture, massage and/or homeopathic remedies which are helpful in bringing the body back into balance.
There are many paths to wellness; what’s important is that you find yours!

Cinnamon May Improve Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
We think of spices as something we use to improve the taste of our food, but historically they were very important in preserving foods to prevent sickness and used for their medicinal properties.
Would you believe that a mere teaspoon of cinnamon contains 28 mg of calcium, almost 1 mg of iron, over 1 g of fiber, and vitamins C, K, and manganese? Cinnamon acts as a tonic to the entire body. It dispels colds and winter chills, and kills a variety of illness-causing bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, staphylococcus and the Asian flu virus. It promotes sweating, increases blood circulation, increases the production of digestive fluids, relieves smooth muscle spasms, and increases the flow of urine. It has been used to treat colds, fevers, edema, arthritis, amenorrhea, angina pain, dyspepsia, and hypochondria. It helps improve weak digestion, colic, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Cinnamon can also act as a relaxant, reducing anxiety and stress, and its astringent properties will stop bleeding. It has strong volatile oils that are a potent antibacterial, antifungal and even a uterine stimulant. Because it is so good tasting, it is doubly effective in fighting mouth infections.
More recently, research has turned its eye on cinnamon and discovered that it has anti-inflammatory effects. Several studies have shown improved insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control by taking as little as ½ teaspoon of cinnamon per day. Improving insulin resistance can help in weight control as well as decreasing the risk for heart disease. Along with the improvement in blood sugar, these studies have documented improvements in triglycerides, blood pressure, and LDL cholesterol.
Cinnamon sticks are great for stirring and kids love to use them as “straws”. Also try adding cinnamon to hot cereals, toast, on top of butter or cream cheese, or sprinkling it in your herbal tea, coffee and cocoa.

Infrared Saunas: What are the Benefits?
Infrared saunas are growing in popularity not only in both spa and clinics, but also for personal, residential use. Many health claims are posted by various websites selling saunas, so I’m going to attempt to sift through the claims and give you information that is useful or backed by research.
Infrared heating is the transfer of energy from one source to another. In the case of Infrared sauna heat, this harmless electromagnetic radiation emits a wavelength which is absorbed by the body and thus heats the body for therapeutic effects. This is different from traditional saunas which heat the human body via heated air or steam.
The advantage to this type of sauna system is that the heat is consistent and usually a lower temperature than conventional saunas. This allows you to stay in the sauna longer for an “even” therapeutic effect and allows for individuals that cannot tolerate excessive heat from conventional sauna to benefit as well.
What therapeutic effects you ask? Clearly, sauna companies will claim every benefit under the sun, but here are some notables that have sound logic behind them. Sweating: The skin is your largest organ and plays a major role in your health. It protects you from varies types of bacteria, viruses and toxins. While your liver, lungs and kidneys are the major players in excreting toxins, there is benefit to your skin sweating to eliminate toxins from the body. In addition, the loss of water will promote thirst and rehydration to assist your kidneys in the detoxification process. Weight Loss: There have been claims of energy expenditure from sauna use that equates to running 2-3 miles. While I think that this claim is stretched considerably, there would be some calories burned to produce sweat. Better Health: Yes, this is pretty broad I admit, but a number of components through the infrared sauna create better health. Infrared saunas promote circulation to benefit cells and the lymphatic system which improves the body immunity. Logic stands that during the summer people are much less likely to catch the flu or a cold. Why? Because the temperature is warmer, less stress on the body to maintain body temperature and the circulatory and lymphatic systems are running at prime speed to fend off foreign invaders. I have personally seen improvement in patients with fibromyalgia and one study published in Clinical Rheumatology in 2009 showed reductions in pain, stiffness and pain following infrared sauna use in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. These results did not reach “statistical significance”, but I think gives us a good glimpse as to the benefits of the infrared sauna.

Should I take Supplements?
As a Registered Dietitian, I am often asked about supplements. I find that most people realize they do not eat well and look to supplements as a solution. Unfortunately, most supplements are made of synthetic vitamins or isolated nutrients and can actually do more harm than good. Click on News and Events to read a great example of this with Calcium supplements. As someone who specializes in ‘healing with whole foods’, I encourage people to get all of their nutrients including vitamins and minerals from real food like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and naturally raised animal products. I started recommending Juice Plus+ (17 fruits, vegetables & whole grains in a capsule or chewable) to my clients - my family and I also take it – because it is whole food nutrition and helps bridge the gap between what people really eat and what they should eat. I’ve also found that many people start craving more healthy foods once they start taking Juice Plus+, especially children. Shoreline Center for Healing can help you evaluate supplements and tailor an individual nutrition plan to meet your health goals.
